You’re invited to…Imagine If

The Institute of Imagination is collaborating with Tate Britain for a day of digital exploration throughout their galleries. Join us for a day of free digital making workshops and playful experiences.

Get hands on and make your own creations with artists and experts and explore Tate Britain in unexpected ways to instruct, imagine and create.

This is a free, drop-in event between 11am – 4pm at Tate Britain and no booking is necessary.

Imagine it!
Make it!
Do it!

What to expect at Imagine If

If this, then that

Paintings often capture movement in an amazing way, but imagine if you could change the movement, or use movement to make the painting? Join a drawing bot workshop in the 1840 display with Rosie Munro Kerr and the Institute of Imagination. Look closely at artworks and bring the paintings to life using household objects and technology.

Use live coding tools and pixel kits to make animated visuals inspired by Bernard Cohen. Artist Antonio Roberts will show you how you can learn code in real time, improvise and make live visuals to accompany music.

Make this, create that

Be inspired by the Antony Gormley display and build a playful city using your body with artist Deborah Rodrigues. Be curious and play with motors, lights and circuits to think about architecture.

Explore digital pattern-craft and emotion-tracking with artist Gemma May Latham. Use sensors to measure your heart beat and create your own unique photograph.

Imagine this, visualise that

Very Very Far Away tells tales from the future. How do we imagine the future? How do we react to new technologies? How could this change the world and worlds beyond ours? We will map possible futures in the gallery, and craft the stories and myths that these futures are made of.

Imagine if you could create your own personalised world within the Tate galleries? Using 360 photography and CoSpaces Virtual Reality, bring your ideas to life. Want to see an elephant roam the rooms? Let birds fly through the rooftops? Or access secret hideaways in the galleries? With this digital play activity you can bring your imagined worlds alive and experience your creations through VR head sets.

The majority of the activities will be best suited for children aged 8-14 years, although there will be some activities for children aged 5 years plus. The Tate Britain is a welcoming space for all ages, so we encourage you to attend whatever age your children are.
