You’re invited to…Lab Learn Hub: Creative Coding

A two-hour experiential workshop delivered in partnership with the class teacher, which develops students’ creative, digital and innovation skills. Children will tinker and experiment with Scratch and Micro:bit to create their own creative coding inventions. Ahead of the workshop, all resources (excluding laptops) will be sent to your school in an “Imagination Box” and teachers will be trained in how to use the Micro:bit through two engaging CPD sessions. During the Creative Coding workshop itself, the class teacher will have live online support from an iOi facilitator.

What can you expect at Lab Learn Hub: Creative Coding?

Professional development sessions (16th & 23rd November)

We will be running two digital professional development sessions for teachers through video conferencing in the week leading up to the two-hour workshop, where teachers will gain an understanding of the iOi’s pedagogical approach and in-depth support to run the Creative Coding workshop with their class.

The sessions will include learning the basics of how to use a BBC Micro:bit and integrating it with Scratch, and how to engage children in simple creative coding. The content of the training will be adapted for online learning and will consist of two sessions, each up to 2 hours in length. You have to attend both sessions in order to book the Creative Coding workshops.

Creative Coding workshop

Children will learn how to code using the Micro:bit, experimenting through one of the following activities:

  • DJ Scratch – Children will create, produce and play music using the coding program Scratch, and will have the opportunity to make their own DYI instruments by connecting Scratch with the Micro:bit.
  • Dance Code – Children will code their own dance choreography using Scratch, as well as making a Micro:bit pedometer before performing their dance routine in front of the class.
  • Art Code: Action Painting – Using Scratch and the Micro:bit children will make drawing wands and create an action painting, exploring how artists like Jackson Pollock use unusual tools to paint.
  • Coding Stories – Using Scratch children will create, produce and showcase their own story, such as a story about lockdown. They will be able to perform their stories using a Micro:bit to trigger their ‘chapters’.

We have a limited number of workshops we can offer, and places will be offered on a first come-first served basis. If you are interested, please indicate so on our online form.

Imagination Box

In addition, we will send each teacher an “Imagination Box” in advance with all the materials and technology required for the Creative Coding workshop (however we ask that the school provides laptops for children to use during the workshop).

We are also taking extra safety precautions to ensure that our equipment is handled safety, in line with the latest Covid-19 recommendations. We will also be providing a separate Covid-19 risk assessment.
