Our Brains and Us – Imagination at The Hub at Wellcome Collection

This July, we’re partnering with the Wellcome Trust to transform The Hub at Wellcome Collection into an Imagination Hub.

Between 19 and 27 July, we’ll be running schools and family days in this dynamic research space on the top floor of the Wellcome Collection. All the sessions are free and focus on children and young people from 5-25.

The Hub at Wellcome Collection is a dynamic interdisciplinary research space where people from a range of backgrounds collaborate on projects exploring medicine, life and art. The Hub is a focal point of research into interdisciplinary practice, exploring how new knowledge is formed and how different perspectives can produce new insights into what it is to be human

Now, for the first time, we’re helping open up the Hub to children and young people and working with the amazing team at Wellcome to explore neurodiversity in a programme of events, as part of a week of activity called ‘Our Brains and Us’.

Our Brains and Us

There’s not one human in the world that thinks in exactly the same way as another. Our Brains and Us celebrates and explores the diversity of our brains – neurodiversity – through hands-on and brains-on collaborative activities to encourage exploration and understanding of the multitude of different ways that people like to learn, explore and experience. Partnering with Wellcome Trust, we’ve been able to bring together our shared expertise to design a programme that aims to nurture an understanding of how we all learn differently and to share and celebrate those differences.

The sessions are designed to be experienced by everyone – whatever age or ability – so that children, young people and their parents, carers and teachers can benefit from a shared and truly diverse learning experience.

Schools sessions

We’re inviting schools to the Hub on 19 and 20 July, to experiment with technology, sound and immersive spaces. In this collaborative event, we’re encouraging students aged 5-18, in mainstream education and with additional needs, to come to the space together. Each activity is designed to stimulate exploration, whatever the age or ability of the student taking part. Students will adapt and experience immersive environments, discover the magic of illusion and the tricks it plays on the brain and explore sound in all its forms using coding, Scratch (a free programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations) and Makey Makeys (an electronic invention tool and toy that allows users to connect everyday objects to computer programs). Find out more about schools sessions.

Join us at family days

Through computer coding, virtual reality, circuits and sound orchestras, pop-up performances and building immersive physical environments we’ll be exploring the mind with family groups through senses, body, movement and emotions. We are also working with fantastic partners like the London Brain Project and the BBC’s CAPE crusaders to bring these days to life. Find out more about family days.

We hope the programme is an opportunity to bring people together of different ages, interests and learning abilities in an environment that enables participants to engage in open ended activities where ideas are celebrated.

“Developing the Our Brains and Us programme with Wellcome Trust has been a wonderful process of collaboration between our teams. At the heart of The Hub at Wellcome Collection is a desire to bring together experts from different fields to drive new insights into what it is to be human. This mantra of cross-disciplinary collaboration is something that we live and breathe at the Institute of Imagination. We are delighted to apply our pedagogy and approach to open up this space to schools, young people and families. The programme comprises an engaging range of activities and we aim to provide an inclusive, welcoming and fun experience for these audiences, stimulating ideas and encouraging learning from each other, using the universal skill of imagination.”

Tom Doust, Director of Experience and Learning, Institute of Imagination

“We are delighted to be partnering with the iOi on this wonderful project. Wellcome shares the iOi vision of stimulating imaginations everywhere and in everyone. This inclusive event will challenge and spark innovative thinking in children from all backgrounds.”
