Ahead of the official launch of our new Imagination Lab in 2017, we opened the doors early last weekend to run our event Digital Make: Digital Do, part of the Crafts Council’s nationwide event Make:Shift:Do. 200 children and families took part in a range of activities celebrating all things digital, and were given an exclusive sneak peak of our new space and a taster of things to come.

Exploring art, sound, and storytelling, attendees created stop-animation films, built their own robotic orchestra, and put together computers to make and code art.

Kano joined us to teach children and families how to build a computer from its components and how to use code to express their creativity. ‘Random Robots’ allowed children to build their own robots, creating a variety of characters and sounds, bringing them all together in a cacophony of robot music. This was a real eye-opener for those who had never made something move or worked with electronics.

We had our 3D printer in-situ to bring ideas to life, allowing children to create a 3D print from a simple drawing with the help of Kidesign.

In our animation studio, children made stop frame animations, creating their own characters from their imaginations. Completed animations could be sent home or shared via social media.

The Imagination Lab is our new pop-up space in The Workshop, situated on the Albert Embankment. Officially launching in early 2017, we will be running a range of activities and events from the space, so keep an eye out for new updates.

We had a great day at Digital Make: Digital Do and were all very excited to showcase these early stages of the new Imagination Lab, and hear what people would like to see in the new space. Thank you to everyone that came down! Take a look at some photos from the event below.

On a final note, we received a fantastic summary of the day in poem form from 9 year old Melissa:

Listen up,
It a lab,
Not a boring old plastic cup,
It needs a dab,
It needs a Nah Nah,
Make a computer,
Animation stays for a day,
It’s supper,
Make a den,
It a cruiser,
There is nearly ten,
So please join today!
