Lab Life: Making Mechanisms

You are invited to…Lab Life: Making Mechanisms

Mechanisms are all around us. They make our lives and jobs easier, often without us consciously recognising them. At Lab Life: Making Mechanisms, you’ll be able to explore the crossover between engineering, art and science, with two workshop activities that allow you to create your own automata and sorting, vending and dispenser machines.

We’ve partnered up with the fantastic team at Fire The Inventor, who will be taking over the Imagination Lab to build a giant Automaton. You’ll be able to combine your artistic and mechanical skills to design your automata using pre-made components, a box of curious junk and dismantled toys. Every automata is then linked together to form a strange and amazing snaking line of machines, up to eight meters long and powered by an electric motor. In the process, you will learn about cams, drives, linkages and how art can be (sometimes weirdly) engineered. Take a look at this video for a sneak peek.

Children will also be able to make their own sorting, vending and dispenser machines out of cardboard, springs, motors, mirobits and basic craft materials to take home. We will be exploring the making of the mechanism to create machines from your own ideas and imagination. From a sweetie jar, to a battery sorting machine, to water dispensers – the possibilities are endless!

When is Lab Life: Making Mechanisms?

There are two Lab Life: Making Mechanisms sessions on Saturday 6th October. The morning session is from 10:00am – 12:30pm and the afternoon session is 1:30pm – 4:00pm. Please arrive at the start of your session to get the most from these activities.
