We are incredibly proud of the community that we have built around the Institute of Imagination. We would not be able to achieve our reach without the support of our donors, partners and volunteers. People often ask us, what makes the Institute of Imagination different? We think the best way to show you is to ask the people that spend the most time with us.

Marlborough Primary School MakerSpace
We work with schools and teachers across London and beyond – through schools sessions for pupils, continuing professional development and advice and support for the classroom. Recently we visited Marlborough Primary School, who we’ve been working with for several years. Alex Gingell, Deputy Head Teacher, shared with us how working with the iOi helped him to set up and run a MakerSpace in the school, a multi-use space for tinkering and experimenting across year groups. We loved hearing from the pupils about skills they’ve learnt in the space and why they think imagination is really important.

Fran and family
Fran and her children, Luke and Adam, have been attending events at the Imagination Lab, our events space in Lambeth, since we opened the doors of the Lab in 2017. Here, Fran and Luke tell us about their experience of the Lab, the Institute of Imagination team and how our events and activities have helped them learn and play together as a family. We hope you enjoy watching the video and thank you to Fran, Luke and Adam for sharing their experience with us.

Mega Maker Lab
Mega Maker Lab was London’s biggest and best experience dedicated to the imagination, which ran in August 2019. Across five creative experience zones visitors tinkered, experimented, built, played and enjoyed time together. Most exciting of all, the ideas all came from young minds, our Imagination Architects, who we worked with to imagine and build the Mega Maker Lab. The Imagination Architects were over 150 young Londoners, who worked in collaboration with the Institute of Imagination and architectural educators MATT+FIONA over 4 months to bring the experience for families to life. This is the story of Mega Maker Lab.

Eastside Young Leaders Academy
In August 2019 we launched Mega Maker Lab; a month of activities designed to help children explore, play, build and imagine. This would not have been possible without the support of our fantastic volunteering team including those from the Eastside Young Leaders Academy; an organisation that runs inspiring programmes to nurture the leadership potential and well-being of young people, and in particular, empowering those from a BAME background to become successful leaders in their future careers. Four EYLA members volunteered for 39 days at Mega Maker Lab, totalling an average of 78 hours each and 312 hours in total over 39 days. Read the story here.

Imagination Pods
Imagination Pods are a set of portable learning resources designed to bridge the gap between formal and informal learning. We currently have four Pods, each with a different focus. The Sound Muddle Pod enables children to experiment and play with sound, the Looking and Exploring Pod gives children tools to discover new spaces and places across a range of environments, the Immersive Spaces Pod allows children to create their own dens. There is also a Pod focused on activities with under fives. Since 2016 we have worked with 2,576 children and 1,022 parents through this programme, 30% of the children we have worked with have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Lab Life: ‘Art meets Science’ (Home Education Programme)
We welcomed home educators and their children aged 5-12 to the Imagination Lab for two half-day Lab Life sessions. Our aim was to use the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) learning approach to introduce home education students and home educators to unique ways of learning and teaching, by combining subjects that are often disparate in traditional education. We welcomed 80 children and 60 adults across the morning and afternoon sessions from across London and beyond. Read the story here

‘Our Brains and Us’: The Hub at The Wellcome Collection and Institute of Imagination
In July the Institute of Imagination (iOi) partnered with Wellcome Trust to transform The Hub at Wellcome Collection, the fifth-floor interdisciplinary research space, into a creative space for investigative play and exploration. In total 720 children, young adults, teachers, parents and carers were welcomed to the space to explore the theme of ‘Our Brains and Us’, an exploration and celebration of the unique nature and diversity of the brain. Each workshop was designed in partnership with The Hub to encourage participants to think, imagine and explore how our brains work. The aim of this partnership was to connect people of different ages, interests and learning abilities together in an environment that enabled individuals and groups to engage in open ended activities, where ideas and differences are celebrated. “We were delighted to partner with the Institute of Imagination (iOi) to deliver our Pioneer Programme – virtual reality field trips designed with school students in mind. We were involved in many events throughout the year and the iOi was a stand-out. Taking in to account the resource expended, they achieved the highest engagement with the most children. Not only did they deliver the biggest impact they were also a pleasure to work with. We share their passion for sparking young minds, and look forward to working with them again in the future.” Deborah Tamir, Program Manager Google Expeditions UK

“I’m delighted to support the Institute of Imagination’s ambitious plans to create a world-class destination with children at its heart. The capital is a global hub of creativity, and it’s only right that we look to foster the creative minds of tomorrow, encouraging youngsters to think big and to let their imaginations run riot! Join me in supporting this one-of-a-kind destination, which will be open to all children and families across the city and beyond.” Justine Simons, Deputy Mayor for Culture and Creative Industries

“How are we developing our imaginations in this increasingly mediated, screen-based sedentary world, where play is a button to press? Our aim is to restore a sense of wonder at life’s possibilities; enabling people to discover things about themselves that they wouldn’t find in any other way.” Mark Wallinger, artist and Turner Prize winner, Institute of Imagination Champion
