6th September 2021, 4:15 pm - 5:15 pm

Free

You’re invited to… iOi at Home Afterschool Club: Make Your Own Microscopes

Every week you can join us afterschool to take part in a creative workshop from the comfort of your own home! In these workshop we will be exploring the theme of Experimental Cities.

Experimental Cities invites you to test, tinker, experiment and explore your city! We’ll take a closer look at nature and allow it to inspire us for how our cities can be designed and structured.

Just use the form at the bottom of the page to sign up!

What are the sessions?

  • 6th September – Make Your Own Microscopes
  • 13th September – Sculpting Paper Cities
  • 20th September – Handheld Digital Cities Part One
  • 27th September – Handheld Digital Cities Part Two

6th September: Make your own microscopes

In this workshop we will build a microscope, using a Smart Phone and Microlens. We will then take ideas from nature, taking a closer look at the amazing shapes, patterns and colours you can see in the world around you.

We will lend out the equipment to any families living in Newham and Lambeth. You can collect this equipment at Plaistow, Carnegie or Clapham library. The equipment we’re lending is Microlens and Smartphones. If you sign up after 2nd September you won’t be able to get this equipment to you in time, but you can still come along to the session to experiment!

For this workshop you will need:

  • Smart Phone
  • Microlens – this is really important part of the workshop, and we don’t recommend joining unless you can borrow this equipment from us.
  • Torch (not mandatory)
  • Leaves, plants or other materials you want to examine closer!

Who is this for?

This is for children aged 5 – 12 years old. You can take part from home, community group or where else you might be! This workshop is also suitable for children with SEND – please just tell us what your child’s needs are before the session.

Please note: This event is ONLY for children and their parents/carers. Part of our role is to keep the children we work with safe. We require anyone joining our online sessions to put their camera and microphone on at the beginning so that we can ensure every group we work with are kept safe. If you are unable to allow us to communicate with you on camera and microphone we regret that we will not be able to let you continue with the session.

How much does it cost?

This is a free workshop!

How do I join?

You can sign up to this session, or all the iOi at Home Afterschool Club sessions using the form below! If you have signed up to this session on another page, you do not need to re-register.

A few days before the workshop we’ll send you the joining information and zoom links.

I don’t have the equipment!

We can currently only lend equipment to families living in Newham and Lambeth. If you live in these boroughs, and don’t have the equipment, then get in touch with us at DLL@ioi.london.

You can watch an introduction to this activity on our iOi at Home website here.
