Lab Late: Sensory Jam

25th June 2019, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

bittersuite sensory experience

You’re invited to…Lab Late: Sensory Jam
A night of sensory exploration, showcasing an interdisciplinary based approach to learning with bittersuite, as part of our Cultural Residency, The Firebird Lab.

What can I expect at Lab Late: Sensory Jam?
An evening of interdisciplinary collaboration for adults from all backgrounds to explore, play and learn new ways of collaborating, creating and educating from a multi-sensory perspective. The workshop will explore empathy through the following activities:

  • This is the Movie in My Mind
A storytelling game which involves listening to a piece of music performed by composer and musician Wilfred Petherbridge and coming up with a story. If the music was a score to a movie, what would the narrative be?
  • Music Mapping
With pens and paper you will experiment with what happens when you draw the music out and try to think of it in terms of shapes, colours, words and ideas. What comes out? And what does this tell us about the way that we hear music.
  • Emotion Map
Building on the music mapping we begin to draw out a map of how the music makes us feel.
  • Sensorial Associations
How can we consider these ideas using our senses – if we have felt that the music makes us feel energetic and playful what sensations can we pair this with what does the music remind us of.

This is an immersive workshop experience designed to help you develop new ways of approaching learning experiences, whether that’s in the classroom, in an informal learning space or at home, using an interdisciplinary STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) approach.

There will be live music from London based trio Glasshopper, an exciting young group born out of a love for melody and improvisation. Led by its saxophonist Jonathan Chung, the group brings together the creative minds of guitarist James Kitchman and drummer Corrie Dick. Influenced by the free, jazz, rock and folk worlds, the band performs Jonathan’s emotionally sophisticated compositions with reverence and abandon, intricately weaving together moments of sonic bliss and euphoric rock-outs. With improvisation at the heart of each performance, Jonathan, Corrie and James are unified in creating original interpretations that inspire fresh stories to unravel within the listener’s imagination.

What is the Cultural Residency?

Each year, the Institute of Imagination runs a cultural residency and this year’s theme is empathy. Bittersuite’s project, The Firebird Lab, is this year’s residency and responds to the theme by exploring Stravinsky’s classical music piece The Firebird through multi-sensory workshops. The project aims to boost the ability to understand the feelings of others, by sharing and exploring different responses to the same musical stimulus. The multi-sensory approach is a fun, experiential way to try out expressing emotions in non-traditional ways. The residency will take place between April to July 2019 at the Imagination Lab. There will be a series of workshops for children, families, schools and adults to contribute to The Firebird Lab and you can book them on our what’s on page.

When is Lab Late: Sensory Jam
The session is on Tuesday 25 June 2019 between 7:00-9:00pm.
