The festive season is almost upon us and #makember is back!

We loved sharing the awesome inventions and ideas created by children, families, schools groups and teachers at our activities with #makember last December and this year we want you to get involved at home too.

Every workshop, we’re blown away by the creativity and ingenuity we see displayed by the young people we work with. So, for the whole of December, we’ll be sharing ideas for home makes inspired by activities we’ve run at our events. And we want to see your makes from home and the classroom too!

How can I get involved?

We want to see what you’ve made at our events as a family, what your children have created or what you make at home together this month inspired by #makember. Share your pictures with us using #makember, and tag us on social media:

Follow along on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram from 1 December to get tips throughout the month for ideas to make together. We hope you enjoy tinkering and experimenting! Each makember post will give you the basic tools you need and guidance about how to get started – but the imaginative bit is up to whoever is taking on the challenge. Just like our events, we won’t be giving you a step by step guide or a specific outcome, as the best way to try these activities out is to iterate and experiment and to share ideas. We can’t wait to see what you come up with together.

Enter the competition 

We want to see your home makes and to say thanks for sharing them with us, all posts that include the hashtag #makember and tag one of our social media accounts before 31 December 2019 will be entered into a random draw to win:

• An awesome Ozobot
• A cardboard virtual reality headset, so you can view VR experiences at home using a smartphone
• An Institute of Imagination baseball cap
• A ‘bot kit’, comprising 2 batteries, a battery pack and a hobby motor so you can tinker with making mini moving inventions at home.
• An iOi tote bag

To be included in the competition, the picture needs to be of something you or your child has made at an Institute of Imagination event or something inspired by one of the #makember posts from 2019. You can send in an entry made by you or a young person your are responsible for if you are over 16 and a UK resident. See below for the full terms and conditions.

Terms and conditions

The competition is open to residents of the United Kingdom aged 16 years or over except employees of Institute of Imagination to submit entries. Parents or carers are encourage to send in makes of children under 16, but the entrant to the prize draw must be 16 or over to be entered. By entering this competition, an entrant is indicating their agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions. Only one entry will be logged per person (counted by social media account) for the prize draw, although we encourage you to share as many makes in the month as you like. Closing date for entry is 31 December 2019. To enter the competition you must share a picture of something made at an iOi event or at home inspired by the #makember campaign, include #makember in your post and tag the Institute of Imagination on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram so we can log your entry. The winner will be selected at random. No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason, including privacy settings. The promoter reserves the right to cancel or amend the competition and these terms and conditions without notice. Any changes to the competition will be notified to entrants as soon as possible.  The prize is one cardboard virtual reality headset, one baseball cap, one ‘bot kit’ (comprising 2 batteries, a battery pack, a hobby motor), an Ozobot and an iOi tote bag in red.  The prize is as stated and no cash or other alternatives will be offered. The prizes are not transferable. Prizes are subject to availability and we reserve the right to substitute any prize with another of equivalent value without giving notice. Winners will be chosen at random on 6 January 2020 and they will be notified on social media by direct message where possible or tagging where a private message is not possible. If you do not claim your prize within 1 week, it will be transferred to another winner. By entering this competition, an entrant is indicating their agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions. Any personal data relating to the winner or any other entrants will be used solely in accordance with current [UK] data protection legislation and will not be disclosed to a third party without the entrant’s prior consent.
