A major summer experience for families to tinker, experiment and play together. Imagined by young minds for the next generation of inventors and makers – and everyone is invited.

What is the Mega Maker Lab?

How many young people can look around them and say they’ve had a say in what they see?

The Mega Maker Lab is a 12,000 square foot experience, imagined by 100 young Londoners in collaboration with the Institute of Imagination and architectural educators MATT+FIONA. It’s London’s biggest and best experience dedicated to the imagination.

Across five creative experience zones, families can tinker, experiment, build, play and enjoy time together. Most exciting of all, the ideas have come from young minds, our Imagination Architects, who we’ve worked with to imagine and build the Mega Maker Lab.

What can I do at the Mega Maker Lab?

Explore across creative zones where you can:

  • Imagine and play zone: unleash imaginations as a family with collaborative building activities and challenges including LEGO, giant marble runs and Stixx machines.
  • Ideas zone: get inspired by other young inventors and design and invent ideas to change the world.
  • Challenge zone: take on BIG challenges like making a bot with motors and batteries, creating with wire to add to Super Sky City and pedal-powered plastic shredding.
  • Tool bar: try out tools like glue guns, drills and LEDs in a safe space to bring ideas and inventions to life.
  • Test arena: make something fly or move with tools and up-cycled materials in a maker space and test creations out with wind machines, ramps, flight spaces and more to discover the art of prototyping through junk modelling.

Plus get tips from experts and share your ideas in a pop-up open arena with performances and showcases. Every visit can be something different, as it’s all about building, making, inventing and playing.

For more details about the activities you can do in each of the zones, visit the booking pages linked below.

How can I buy tickets?

Weekender entry
Over weekends throughout August, Mega Maker Lab will be jam-packed with activity. As well as entry there will be pop-shows from our partners and experts on hand for advice. Entry at weekends is by time slot.

Weekday entry
Weekdays are a great time to visit Mega Maker Lab, especially if you’re coming as a group. You can book morning or afternoon entry.

Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through August, you can book entry to Mega Maker Lab plus a 1 hour masterclass with experts, exploring everything from virtual reality and holograms to coding music and stop motion animation. The masterclasses are £25 which includes entry to Mega Maker Lab for one child and one adult and are suitable for children aged 7-12 years. The Masterclasses on offer are Sphero Racetrack, Virtual Worlds, Animation Exploration, Holographic Machines and Make Some Noise.

Lab Liftoff skills camps

There are six Lab Liftoff skills in August, our day long, drop-off camps for children aged 7-12 years. These are in-depth camps exploring coding, robotics and invention. You can experience robotics and invention with LEGO WeDo kits at Lab Liftoff: Bricks & Code and make an interactive robot animal with Micro:bit at Lab Liftoff: Robot Zoo.

Who is the Mega Maker Lab for?

The experience is for families with children ages 5-12 years. Parents and carers must stay with their children during the experience.

Mega Maker Lab: Celebrating Neurodiversity

Mega Maker Lab is SEND friendly with plenty to explore at your own pace. On 13 August, there is a neuro-diverse day for those looking for calmer, quieter environments for children with special educational needs. On this day, the experience has been adapted to enhance the day for those with additional needs. Find out more.

When can I visit?

We’ll be open Tuesdays-Sundays between 1-31 August, so you can visit 6 days a week! We’ll also be open on Bank Holiday Monday.

Where is Mega Maker Lab?

Mega Maker Lab will be at The Workshop, 26 Lambeth High Street where our Imagination Lab is located.

We’re taking over the main Engine Hall to transform it into the Mega Maker Lab, plus the Imagination Lab will have a range of workshops and skills camps throughout the summer.

How are young people involved?

We are working with 100 primary school children, who are our Imagination Architects, to realise the Mega Maker Lab. In April, they joined us at the Imagination Lab for design workshops with MATT+FIONA and in July, they will be returning to help bring their ideas to life with building and engineering workshops. Read more about the project so far with MATT+FIONA and our Imagination Architects.
