The Institute of Imagination continues its programme of events with ‘lab live: reality’ in partnership with Rolls-Royce. The second of our large-scale ‘lab live’ family events taking place at the Imagination Lab on London’s Albert Embankment where we will be taking over the 12,000 sq ft Engine Room at the Workshop to welcome children with their families.
We are delighted to be working in partnership with Rolls-Royce, an organisation committed to enthusing and inspiring young people to explore the world through access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). Join us for a fantastic day of activities brought to you with a range of 25 supporting partners and makers, where participants can explore what ‘reality’ means through design, mechanics, engineering and futuristic exploration.

- Bloodhound SSC (Super Sonic Car)
Be amazed at a model of the fantastic Bloodhound SSC – one of the fastest cars on earth! Brought to you by the team at Rolls-Royce, visitors have the chance to build their own models in the ‘connect challenge’.
- Creative Sparkworks
Create your own audio-visual world using film and animation.
- Digital Microscope and Imagination Pods
Build and use a simple digital microscope and explore the micro reality around you.
- Magic Machine
Let your imagination run wild by inventing and building your own Magic Machine.
- 3D Printing
Understanding the concept of design engineering and spanning both the physical and digital. How does design thinking enable an idea to become a reality?

Design art for this impressive robotic drawing board, and find out how you can instantly share it with family around the world.
- iOi Virtual Reality
Explore the virtual world through the latest Virtual Reality technology HTC Vive. Explore engines, trains aeroplanes or create your own art with Google Tiltbrush.

Understand the science and art of your perception of reality and explore the weird and wonderful world of illusion.
- Google Expeditions
Immerse yourself in new worlds with Google Expedition’s programme. Explore the surface of Mars, visit the International Space Station or submerge yourself in the beautiful underworld of coral reefs.
- Fuze
Computer coding is now deeply rooted into the curriculum and with Fuze, an education focussed computer you can play in a coding environment and combine it with simple electronics and sensors for an engaging learning experience.
- Tinkering with Motors
Use motors, propellers and crafts materials to make something move.
- Neutral Digital
Experience augmented reality with Neutral Digital through a Microsoft HoloLens which allows you to interact with holograms around you.
- The Renaissance Atelier
Learn traditional skills in a modern world. Come and design future realities and art and create your own sculpture.
- Robert’s Workshop
Build a kit car and making it go either with a balloon, battery or elastic band and race others to see who’s fastest.
- Sphero Track by U Can Too & Toy Maker by U Can Too
Sphero is a Robotic Ball, who loves an interesting journey. Help us to collaboratively develop our track, over the course of the day to create interesting interactions for Sphero trigger as it journeys around the track, then take control of Sphero to test your interaction. Explore how interactive toys are made with our Toy Maker challenge. Using simple circuits you will program a toy and ‘Make Stuff Happen’!

Explore your fidgeting and create your own fidget tool to direct your energy.
- Cardboard Automata
Build and decorate your own ‘cardboard automata’ using simple mechanical elements such as cams, levers, and linkages, resulting in moving sculptures.
- The Windtube
Explore aerodynamics by making objects that fly and testing them out in the iOi’s windtube.
- #Yosteam
A range of activities for everyone, with a focus on encouraging girls into technology.
- Zappar
Create an augmented reality poster of your Future Self using ZapWorks – Zappar’s powerful and easy-to-use AR content creation tool.
- CoSpaces
Make your own VR experiences using CoSpaces App. Work in a 3D environment then view it using a headset.
- State of Play Games
Hidden at the event are KAMI 2 puzzles. Find and solve all 12 in augmented reality and design your own puzzles with the creators.
- The Zen Room
Change your perspective on reality by immersing in quiet awareness.
